Bill Shorten

Principal and Founder – Bill Shorten is one of the founders of the company. Prior to launching the Cascade Living Group venture, he spent 10 years as the Director of Real Estate Finance for a large national senior housing company. His direct responsibilities for the Cascade Living Group include acquisition and development, finance, budgeting and accounting.

 

Tom Stanley

Principal and Founder – Together with Mr. Shorten, Tom Stanley formed the Cascade Living Group. Mr. Stanley is an attorney with 20 years of experience in the senior housing field.  Prior to forming the company, Mr. Stanley was the legal counsel to a large national senior housing company. His direct responsibilities include development and construction, legal, risk management and human resource functions.

 

Dale Zulauf

Principal and Founder – Mr. Zulauf is also one of the founders of Cascade Living Group and brings decades of operational experience to the company.  Mr. Zulauf has served as President, Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of Operations for several of the nation’s largest assisted living, retirement and skilled nursing/subacute providers.  Mr. Zulauf is also a co-founder of A Place for Mom, Inc., the nation’s premier senior housing placement and referral organization.

In addition, he is founder of Zulauf Health Ventures, Inc., providing operational/sales consulting and executive search services to the senior housing industry. He participates in the evaluation of all potential acquisitions and developments for Cascade Living Group and is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Cascade communities.

 

Kim Wagner

Principal and Vice President of Sales and Marketing – Ms. Wagner has over 20 years of experience in sales and marketing, both in and out of the senior living industry. In addition, Kim has held positions as a multi-site regional sales manager with emphasis on sales coaching and consulting. She has worked with a number of regional and national senior housing organizations.

 

Debbie Walker

team_debbieDirector of Wellness Services – Debbie Walker joined Cascade Living Group August 2010. As an RN she has worked in the senior housing industry for over 22 years. Prior to joining our team she was an executive nurse for a large assisted living provider, a commissioner on disabilities for the City of Tacoma, as well as having her own consulting company. In addition to her BSN degree, Debbie is a board certified legal nurse consultant with the American Board of Nurse Specialties. Her passion is  to ensure each of our community’s focus is caring for the whole person. This can be seen in our programs designed to address all aspects of wellness not only for our residents but also for our associates.

In her time away from work she  loves advocating for persons with disabilities,  traveling, cooking, gardening and spending time with her family.

 

Jarrett Houser

team_jarrettDirector of Operations – A native Washingtonian, Houser has more than 17 years experience as a senior living professional. He managed several different properties during his 6 years with Aegis Living and brought this experience with him to Arbor Village in 2008. Houser grew up in the Kent area and enjoys assisting those he and his family have known for years. He currently lives in Maple Valley with his wife and two children, a boy and a girl. Houser has a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing from Brigham Young University.

 

Kathryn Haynes

meet-team-Kathrine-hRegional Director of Operations Oregon – Kathryn’s career in Long Term Care began over 40 years ago as a Registered Nurse . She has worked in multiple states as a Nurse, Administrator and Director of Operations. Working with the Elderly has always been her passion and preference.

A native of Oregon, Kathryn enjoys hiking in the beautiful Northwest as well as gardening and spending time with her children and 13 grandchildren.

 

Lorena Oropeza

Regional Director of Operations – Lorena started her career in the hotel industry, which instilled in her a strong focus on the importance of exceptional customer service. In 1999, she was given an opportunity to start as Executive Director in training for a 129 unit Assisted Living community in Anaheim, California working for a small private company that went on to become one of the largest operators in senior housing industry.

After almost five years, Lorena joined BPM Senior Living in 2004 as Executive Director of Regency Grand in West Covina, California. There she was responsible for leadership and oversight of 145 unit Assisted Living and Memory Care community. In 2012 Lorena was promoted to Director of Operations and was responsible for oversight of all BPM Senior Living Communities. In 2019, Lorena joined the CLG family through the acquisition of BPM Senior Living communities. In this capacity she supports the needs of our Executive Directors as well as upholds the company standards and overall mission.

In her free time, Lorena and her husband enjoy attending their two young daughters sporting events.

 

Katie Andrews RN, BSN

meet-team-Kathrine-aOregon Regional Wellness Director – A native Oregonian, Katie has over 10 years of geriatric healthcare experience. She attended the  Intercollegiate College of Nursing through Washington State University. Katie returned to Oregon to work as the Wellness Director at Spring Valley, Springfield, Oregon.  She expanded her role as a the regional nurse supporting nurse education and training throughout the state.   Katie joined Cascade Living Group in  2015 as the  Regional Wellness Director for Oregon.

Katie enjoys spending time with her husband and two German shepherds, whether it be hiking, camping, or a lazy day by the fire. Coffee is usually close by and it’s  never too late at night to start a home improvement or crafting project!

Chris Sutton

meet-chrisRegional Wellness Director – Chris joined Cascade Living Group August 2016. She has 29 years of nursing experience primarily in the geriatric field. She was born and raised on the East Coast but has called the Pacific Northwest Home for many years. She and her husband have raised two sons who now both serve in the military. She was inspired to become a nurse as her father shared his fireman experiences with her while growing up. Now after years of being a nursing professional and having a family of our own, she was thankful to be able to care for her dad when his health began to decline.

Kay Bassett, RN

Regional Wellness Director – Kay Bassett joined Cascade Living Group in June, 2019. Kay has been working as an executive level RN in the senior living industry since 2015. Prior to that Kay was the Director of Health Services in a large assisted living community for 3 and a half years.

Kay is a native Oregonian and loves the outdoors. Away from work you will likely find her hiking nearby forest trails, gardening or spending time with her four sons.

Jennifer Riggins

Director of Training and Development – Jennifer has 15 years of experience in the senior living industry with a focus on Sales and Marketing. She joined Cascade Living Group in 2009 and is responsible for the creation, implementation, and improvement of training efforts; while maintaining consistent culture within the company. Jennifer’s greatest strengths are her creativity, leadership, and passion for seniors. Working with seniors has been the most rewarding part of her career. It has a way of making you take a step back from your own life and validating what is meaningful. Jennifer thrives on coaching, mentoring and collaborating with the marketing teams to help ensure they are successful in meeting their goals.

Living in the beautiful town of Gig Harbor, WA with her family; Jennifer enjoys spending time with her granddaughter Eloise, traveling, hiking, concerts, and sailing.

 

Mary Sanders

Mary-Brady-SandersRegional Director of Sales and Marketing – Mary Brady Sanders is a 4th-generation native of Northern Nevada and a 20-year marketing and hospitality veteran. Her background brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in 4 and 5 star amenities, as well as a true appreciation for the important standards necessary for high levels of guest service. Mary has recently returned to the Reno area following 15-years serving at some of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast’s most outstanding resort destinations including The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia and at Callaway Gardens, a 13,000-acre resort and garden preserve in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

Sanders attended the University of Nevada, Reno and is a graduate of the Northern Nevada Real Estate School.

Mary resides in Reno, enjoys living on the family ranch, riding horses, skiing, hunting and fishing as well as traveling to visit her 3 children and her 4 grandchildren.

 

Jessi Helgren

Regional Director of Sales and Marketing – Jessi is a Northern Nevada native and received her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies  – with an emphasis in Aging from the University of Nevada Reno. In addition to her bachelor’s degree,  she also holds a Minor and Certification in Gerontology. For Jessi working with seniors and families in our community has been a life-long passion and mission. As a student in high school, she volunteered in local senior homes and assisted living communities which inspired her to seek the education she needed to become part of the healthcare community. Jessi has over 10 years of professional health care experience.  She served as the Director of Life Enrichment and Volunteer Coordinator with Life Care Center of Reno, a premier skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. Furthering her geriatric career, Jessi served as the Community Outreach Liaison for Right at Home – In-Home Care. Jessi joined  Cascades Living Group In 2011 and is now part of the Regional Sales and Marketing team. Jessi’s grandparents are residents at our beautiful senior living community in Spanish Springs Nevada. She is so proud of the top-notch care and services her loved ones receive from the great staff and community leaders at Cascades of the Sierra. Jessi enjoys working with local animal rescue and dog fostering programs, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.

 

Suzanne Garside

Regional Director of Sales and Marketing – As Regional Director of Sales and Marketing for Cascade Living Group, Suzanne brings a wealth of experience to her teams.   As a successful 15-year veteran in senior living, Suzanne began her early career as an activity assistant in an independent living community in La Jolla, CA.  Her experience also includes Community Development Coordinator for Gencare Lifestyle, Director of Sales and Marketing for ERA Living as well as Executive Director in an Emeritus assisted living and memory care community.  In Suzanne’s most recent roles she traveled the US as an Operation Specialist and Regional Director of Operations for Senior Lifestyles, a Chicago based company.

Suzanne’s true passion is sales and marketing.  “It makes me so happy to have seniors join a community and see them start to enjoy life again.  Providing them with a new chapter and watching them flourish where we can care for them is so rewarding.”

Suzanne provides support for the sales teams in our Pacific Northwest communities. She loves living in the Seattle area where in her spare time Suzanne enjoys her dogs, cats, traveling and going to baseball games.

 

Maureen Boyle

team_MaureenDirector of Food and Dining – A graduate with distinction from Le Cordon Bleu’s Professional Cuisine program in Sydney, Australia, Maureen is also a Registered Dietitian.  She received her M.B.A. from Boston College, and earned her B.S. in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management with highest distinction from Penn State University.  In addition, Maureen earned her Dietitian Registration from Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital (an affiliate of the Harvard Medical School). Ms. Boyle holds active membership in both culinary and nutrition organizations, including The American Dietetic Association and Food and Culinary Professionals. The founder and president of Boyle Consulting since 1996, Maureen  brings more than 30 years of experience to the hospitality and senior living professions.

 

Brad Wheeler

Controller – Brad Wheeler is a seasoned accounting professional with more than 17 years in corporate and public accounting. After graduation from Montana State University, he worked as an auditor for Ernst & Young in Anchorage, where he also achieved his CPA. Brad began working in the senior living industry in 2005 where his areas of expertise include financial reporting, real estate, lease accounting, construction, compliance, and process improvement. “I love working with folks who are good at what they do; especially when what they do is help to improve lives of others.”

 

Alys Anderson

Accounting Manager – Alys joined Cascade Living Group in July 1989 and has 30 years of Senior Housing Accounting. Entering accounting right out of college from the University of Oregon she started with a small company that built one of the first Assisted Living Communities in the Country, which is now run by Cascade Living Group. She started with Construction Accounting for the Assisted Living Communities, then moved onto Community Accountant and now, since 2007, has been the Accounting Manager for the Salem Office. Alys was born in Syracuse, New York and lived briefly in Tucson, Arizona when she was young before her family settled into Oregon where she grew up in a rural Costal Mountain range. She is married to her husband of 30 plus years, together they have one son, two huskies and multiple cats. Alys enjoys hiking, cooking, flower gardening and entertaining her friends and family.

 

Lynne Gustafson

Special Projects – Ms. Gustafson’s accounting career spans over 20 years since receiving her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington Business School and CPA from the State of Washington. She worked for several large manufacturing firms in the Seattle area as both a staff accountant and private contractor prior to joining Cascade Living Group in March of 2008. Her background brings a wealth of experience to the team.

 

Casey Shorten

Fitness Director – Casey Shorten is the Fitness Director for Cascade Living Group. Casey is certified by the American Arthritis Foundation as an instructor in group exercise. She has her Bachelor of Arts degree and has worked as a respiratory therapist in Seattle hospitals and nursing homes. Casey’s hope is for all the residents and employees of the CLG facilities to embrace an active lifestyle whether it is on their own or through an EverFit class to enjoy the benefit of better health and happier lives.

 

Valerie Valdez

Valerie-teamOperations Specialist – Valerie began her career in senior living in by 1999 opening a 60 unit Memory Care in the position of the Business Office Manager.  She moved to an Assisted Living/Memory Care where she was promoted from Business Office Manager to Executive Director and then Area Director.  She has managed 3 different Memory Care Communities and has worked recently worked opening a new 88 unit community.  Valerie has a passion to work with seniors, staff and families.  “It is wonderful to work with a company that has integrity, CLG is definitely about doing the right thing!  I love coming to work everyday!”

 

Lisa Waisath

Operations Specialist – Lisa Waisath joined the CLG team as an Operations Specialist in 2019. She comes with 17 years’ experience in the field, holding positions as Business Office Director, Marketing Director, Assistant Administrator, and Executive Director and with experience in both the non-profit and for-profit worlds. Originally an Education major, her passion for training and learning has led to her certification by DSHS to train long-term care workers in WA for Dementia and Mental Health specialty courses as well as to develop continuing education curricula. She has served on multiple Committees, Advisory Groups, and Cabinets for WHCA and LeadingAge Washington and has been instrumental in producing annual conferences and presenting educational sessions.

When not at work, Lisa’s passions include cooking, reading, travelling, and family.

Emily Headley R.D.

Operations Specialist – Starting as a food service director in 1981, after becoming a Registered Dietitian, she and a partner started an industry-specific property management firm in 1982. They were soon acquired by Transamerica Realty Services, and their subsidiary senior living company thrived for 16 years, with Headley as Vice President.

Kisco Senior Living purchased Transamerica Senior Living in 2001, and Headley stepped back to a Regional Director position in conjunction with a move to Tahoe City, CA. After decades of travelling to properties nation-wide, she happily settled into her role at the Cascade Living Group property Sierra Place for 10 years, then moved into her current position as Operations Specialist.

She enjoys skiing and backpacking with her husband of 35 years, and is proud of her three adult sons who still adore the Tahoe area. Regular doses of dancing and African drumming round out her personal fun time.

 

Nathan Dolejsi

Asset ManagerNathan Dolejsi joined the team in December 2016.  He brings 20 years of asset management experience from the commercial real estate sector.  Nathan has worked on both the debt and equity side in multifamily, retail, senior housing, and affordable housing.  His experience includes an emphasis on management of the  physical assets, as well as experience in financial monitoring, valuations and financing.

Stacy Rayner, M.Ed., SHRM-CP

Director of Human Resources – Stacy joined the Home Office team in January 2017 as Director of Human Resources. Stacy started with Cascade Living Group in September 2015as the Executive Director at the Deerfield Village community in Milwaukie, Oregon. Prior to joining Cascade Living Group, Stacy was on faculty at a local college and taught a variety of health care and human resources classes. She also wrote curriculum and oversaw the allied health accreditation for the college. Stacy holds an Associate’s degree in Gerontology, a Bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration and a Master’s degree in Education and Leadership.
